Your Firm Bought AI. Did AI Buy You Anything?

Most firms can tell you what they are spending on AI. Few can tell you what it has returned. That gap comes down to two questions: what is AI actually getting your firm, and how would you know?

Starting with the first question, firms really are seeing gains this year: faster document intake and extraction, faster client knowledge retrieval, AI-assisted review and issue identification, less time spent searching for information and less manual data entry. The wins are real. The problem is they rarely show up anywhere leadership is actually looking: not in realization rates or margin, not in capacity, not in the growth of advisory services.

That is where the second question comes in, and it is not a knock on the tools. Gary Thomson and Kate Krupey keep seeing the same pattern: firms layer AI on top of how they already work rather than using it to change how the work gets done. A task gets faster, but the firm’s economics do not move, so the cost is real and the return stays invisible. Firms end up paying for AI and still paying for the old way of doing the work underneath it.

Ahead of the session, we’re asking BDO members one question: What AI question is most pressing to you, whether it’s about the profession’s future or your firm’s challenges today?

Click here to share your answer, and Gary and Kate will be drawing on responses to shape the conversation.
